Our Story:
May 13th, 2010 was the day that “lightning struck” and changed our family’s lives forever. My husband, Marty Collins, went in for procedure to correct chronic atrial fibrillation. During the procedure, there were unforeseen complications that resulted in him having a bilateral stroke. When he awoke, several days after surgery, he was blind, partially paralyzed and unable to recognize anyone but myself. I was told that he most likely would never be able to walk, drive, see and even possibly think as an adult again. The staff was trying to prepare me for the worst. I did not listen and on the first day of rehab, I put Marty’s Superman t-shirt on him and we went to work.

The Problem:
We live in U.S. with presumably the best medial system in the world and still the recovery rate for brain injury and stroke patients is low. I believe that part of the reason for this is because the patients make critical mistakes in our recovery. We, as patients, wait on the insurance company to approve and pay for more therapy, we wait on the doctors, nurses, and therapists to tell us the magic secret for recovery. We do not take advantage of proven, simple, effective recovery strategies that we can do in our own homes. Please, do not lose critical recovery time waiting on the health care system to develop a master plan for your recovery. You as the patient, much take control of your own recovery with the guidance and care from your doctor and health care time.

The Solution:
Take charge of your own recovery. Learn to be an empowered patient. We offer specialized brain injury coaches to teach and guide you in this process. We assist you in developing a master plan for your recovery by engaging your doctors, therapists and other members of your health care team. We never take the place of your doctor or therapist but coach you in better communication with them so you can achieve your highest possible recovery potential.
